Martin works in the Integrated Technologies sub-group at the Alternative Energy Laboratory (AEL), part of the Buildings and Renewables Group (BRG) at CanmetENERGY in Ottawa (CEO), one of Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) national research laboratories. He has been with NRCan for the last 20 Years.
Mr. Thomas develops and evaluates new residential/ commercial HVAC technologies that may lead to reduced greenhouse gas and/or other pollutant emissions. Martin also provides technical support to the Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) in relation to energy-related regulations, as well as HVAC equipment performance Standards.
During his career, his activities have included; the study of gas appliance plume dispersal; the development of improved residential fireplace technologies and infra-red burners; the testing and evaluation of residential and commercial water heaters and space heating systems; natural gas appliance standards development; and the modification and monitoring of industrial processes, including some large boilers and drying furnaces, to improve efficiency and or increase production rates. More recently, Martin has been involved in evaluating hybrid heating systems and the support of standards for the use of Hydrogen as an alternative zero carbon fuel.
Prior to joining CanmetENERGY, Martin worked for 10 years as a Research Scientist with British Gas R&D at Watson House in London, UK, as well the Gas Research Centre, Loughborough, UK and also for 8 years as a Research Engineer with the Canadian Gas Research Institute in Toronto.
Martin holds a Master of Science Degree, in Energy Conservation and the Environment, from Cranfield University, UK and a Bachelors Degree with Honours, in Fuel and Combustion Science, from Leeds University, UK.
Martin is a Professional Engineer in Canada, a Chartered Engineer in theUK, a Member of ASHRAE (US) and a Member of the Energy Institute (UK).
