Martin Thomas

Martin Thomas is a Project Engineer at the Buildings and Renewables Group (BRG), at CanmetENERGY in Ottawa, and has held this position since 2002. Prior to Joining CanmetENERGY in Ottawa, Martin worked at the Canadian Gas Research Institute, based in Toronto, for 8 years and prior to that, with British Gas Research and Development for 10 Years. Martin has a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in “Fuel & Combustion Science” from Leeds University in the UK and a Master of Science Degree in “Energy Conservation and the Environment” from Cranfield University (formerly Cranfield Institute of Technology) in the UK. Martin is currently working on advanced technologies for residential and commercial, space and water heating applications, at the Alternative Energy Laboratory, at the Bells Corners Complex. This work may include multi-function appliances – such as combined space and water heating, thermally driven power generating technologies, heat pumps and zero carbon technologies, including hydrogen blends, suitable for heating homes and commercial buildings. Martin Provides Technical Advice to the Office of Energy Efficiency in support of their programs, regulations, codes, and standards efforts.

One of Martins latest projects has been to help set-up two facilities that will enable the testing of technologies that utilize pure hydrogen, or a 20% hydrogen by volume in natural gas blend, as a fuel.
